Carl G. Amrhein

Dr. Carl G. Amrhein is Provost and Vice President (Academic) at the University of Alberta. Dr. Amrhein came to the University of Alberta in 2003 following his 17 years at the University of Toronto and will begin his third term as Provost and Vice President (Academic) at the University of Alberta on July 1, 2014.

While at the University of Toronto, Professor Amrhein served as Chair of the Department of Geography and Graduate Program in Planning from 1993 to 1997, and finally as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science from 1997 to 2003.

Dr. Amrhein holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography from Pennsylvania State University (1978) and a PhD in Geography from State University of New York at Buffalo (1984) with research interest in urban and economic geography, migration, and quantitative methods. He also attended the Institute for Education Management at Harvard University, Graduate School of Education.

Dr. Amrhein has served and continues to serve on many committees and boards. He currently is a member of Fulbright Canada: Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America, National Statistics Council: Statistics Canada, and Director for the German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research.

Throughout his career, Dr. Amrhein has received many honours and awards. Among his many honours are the Ami de Ia Francophonie Award and the German-Canadian Friendship Award. He was recently awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany.
