Joanna Sterling

Joanna Sterling is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, in the Department of Psychology, at Princeton University. Prior to this she was Research Manager on Facebook’s Central Integrity team which seeks to protect people and communities from harmful experiences on Facebook. This is done by building support experiences for people who use Facebook products, creating AI systems to detect malicious content, and establishing human review systems for the thousands of community operations agents who help care for Facebook users. In particular, she supported the research teams combatting misinformation and inauthentic behavior. Before becoming a manager, Mrs. Sterling was a mixed methods researcher specializing in topics related to misinformation and ways to mitigate the spread of misinformation.

Prior to working at Facebook, Joanna Sterling was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. Her postdoctoral research focused on political ideology and polarization. She completed a PhD in Social Psychology from New York University and also holds a B.Phil. in both Psychology and International and Area Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. Her doctoral research investigated how the underlying cognitive and motivational differences between liberals and conservatives manifest themselves in language.
