Peter Backx, FRSC

Peter Backx received his B.Sc., M.Sc. and DVM from the University of Guelph in biophysics, chemistry and veterinary medicine. He subsequently received his PhD from the University of Calgary in cardiac physiology. After receiving postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Backx joined the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University as an Assistant Professor in 1991. In October 1993, Dr. Backx was recruited to the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto as an Assistant Professor and joined the University Health Network (Toronto General Hospital) as a Staff Scientist. Subsequently, Dr. Backx accepted a position as Professor of Physiology and Medicine at the University of Toronto as well as Senior Scientist at the University Health Network. In 2016, Dr. Backx moved to the Department of Biology at York University where is Professor and holds a Canada Research Chair in in Cardiovascular Biology. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the American Heart Association. Dr. Backx’s research focuses on heart disease particularly the role of ion channels and membrane transporters in heart disease initiation and progression, as well as arrhythmias.
