Hans-Joachim Wieden is an Associate Vice-President (Partnerships, Knowledge Mobilization, and Innovation) and Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Manitoba. Prior to joining the University of Manitoba, he was a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Lethbridge.

Dr. Wieden has developed a free access collection on the topic of Dual Use Research in the Life Sciences that deals with such topics as Synthetic Biology, next-generation sequencing, and personal genomics. He has also designed a program on industry-partnered research challenges (deep Yellow) that fosters industry-research interactions, based on an initial NSERC-CREATE grant.

Dr. Wieden is widely published and has received several awards, including a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) from 2005 to 2010. He holds a PhD in Biochemistry from Universität Witten/Herdecke.
