Catherine Middleton

Professor, Ted Rogers School of Information Technology Management, Toronto Metropolitan University (Toronto, ON)

Dr. Middleton is a Professor at the Ted Rogers School of Information Technology Management at Toronto Metropolitan University and served as the School’s Director from 2019 to 2024. Catherine’s research focuses on the development and use of new communication technologies, with specific interests in mobile devices and fixed and wireless broadband networks. Her work examines digital inclusion and exclusion, seeking to better understand policies and actions needed to ensure all citizens can participate fully in the digital economy and engage in digital society.

Dr. Middleton held a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Communications Technologies in the Information Society and was named to the inaugural cohort of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists in 2014. Dr. Middleton was a Canadian Science Policy Fellow at the CRTC (Canada’s communications regulator) and is currently a Fellow at the Rogers Cybersecurity Catalyst examining how older adults navigate the cybersecurity landscape.

Dr. Middleton is an experienced director. She is a past board chair of CANARIE, Canada’s advanced research and education network and served on the boards of ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) and Compute Ontario. She currently serves on the board of the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services (CCTS). Catherine holds the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD.D) designation and is a member of the ICD and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Dr. Middleton holds a BA Honours from Queen’s University, an MBA from Bond University (Australia), and a PhD in Management Information Systems from the Schulich School of Business at York University.
