The Council of Canadian Academies is pleased to announce the appointment of Margaret Bloodworth, C.M. as Chair of its Board of Governors. Ms. Bloodworth is a former federal Deputy Minister and National Security Advisor.
A member of the Order of Canada, Ms. Bloodworth has received the Public Service of Canada Outstanding Achievement Award and the Vanier Medal of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada. She is also a Senior Fellow with the University of Ottawa School of Public and International Affairs, chairs the board of Cornerstone Housing for Women, and is a member of the boards of the Community Foundation of Ottawa and the World University Service of Canada.
“Ms. Bloodworth’s extensive background and understanding of public policy will be invaluable to the Council’s Board of Governors,” said Elizabeth Dowdeswell, President and CEO of the Council. “As President of the Council of Canadian Academies, I am confident that she will provide strong leadership as we prepare for the next phase of our growth.”

The Council’s 12-member Board of Governors is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organization, ensuring the fulfillment of the Council’s mandate and the oversight of its operations. The Board also features a unique structure. The Council’s three Member Academies each nominate two Fellows from their respective Academy to sit as governors. These six governors then nominate two additional governors from the general public. The remaining four individuals are recommended by the federal Minister of Industry and are formally appointed by the Board. The Chair is chosen through a vote of all Board members. Ms. Bloodworth’s term as Chair began on June 18, 2013.
