Graham Bell appointed to the Board of Governors for the Council of Canadian Academies

The Council of Canadian Academies is pleased to announce the appointment of Graham Bell, FRSC, to its Board of Governors. Dr. Bell is Research Director, James McGill Professor Chair, Department of Biology, McGill University (Montréal, QC).

The Council’s 12-member Board of Governors is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organization, ensuring the fulfillment of the Council’s mandate, and oversight of its operations. The Board also features a unique structure. The Council’s three Member Academies each appoint two governors. These six governors then appoint two additional governors from the general public. The remaining four individuals are proposed by the federal Minister of Industry and are formally appointed by the Board. Dr. Bell is a Royal Society of Canada appointee, and will serve for three years.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Bell to the Board of Governors,” said Margaret Bloodworth, Chair of the Council’s Board, “His distinguished background and perspective as a Fellow from the Royal Society of Canada will undoubtedly enrich the work of our Board and I look forward to working with him.”

Dr. Bell is an evolutionary biologist with three main interests: understanding the mechanism of natural selection, interpreting the main features of life cycles, and explaining the maintenance of biodiversity. He helped to found the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution, and was its first President from 2005-2007. He is currently President of the Royal Society of Canada.
