Peter Grütter is Professor in the Physics Department at McGill University, Scientific Director of the NSERC Nano Innovation Platform, and Fellow and Director of the Nanoelectronics Program of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR).
Professor Grütter received his PhD from the University in Basel (1989) in the field of Magnetic Force Microscopy. After stays at the IBM Almaden Research Center and at the IBM Zurich Research Labs he joined the Physics Department at McGill University in 1994. His group works on developing tools, mainly scanning probe microscopy-based, and applying them to problems in nanoscience, in particular nanoelectronics.
Dr. Grütter has received a number of awards including, the NSERC EWR Steacie award (2001), CIFAR Young Explorer Prize (“Top 20 under 40 in Canada” in 2002), the Rutherford Memorial Medal in Physics from the Royal Society of Canada (2005), and the Carrie Derick Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision and Teaching at McGill (2005).
Dr. Grütter is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and was appointed a James McGill Professor by McGill University in 2006.
