Doug Owram, FRSC

Doug Owram is a Canadian historian who began his academic career in the Department of History at the University of Alberta in 1976. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1980 and Professor in 1985 before serving as Dean of Arts and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. In 1995 Dr. Owram has appointed Vice-President (Academic), and in 1998 he became Provost, assuming responsibilities of senior Vice-President of the university and Chief Operating Officer. He completed his term in 2003.

In 2006 he was recruited to the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan Campus. During his term, he oversaw the expansion of enrollment from 3,200 to 8,000 full-time students and a $400 million construction program. He completed his term at the end of June 2012 and is now teaching on a half-time basis for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Dr. Owram has been recognized with numerous honours and awards throughout his distinguished career. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1990, has served as President of the Canadian Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences (2002-2004) and was the founding Chair of Alberta’s accreditation body, The Campus Alberta Quality Council (2003-2006). In 2012, Dr. Owram completed a three-year term as Secretary to Academy I of the Royal Society of Canada.

Dr. Doug Owram received his BA and MA from Queen’s University and his PhD from the University of Toronto.
