Harry Nelson

Dr. Harry Nelson is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia, currently investigating what role ecosystem services could provide as an alternative business model for Indigenous groups managing forest lands in B.C. He continues to work on assessing the impacts of climate change on how we manage our forests and exploring adaptation options. Prior to his appointment at the University, Dr. Nelson served as the Associate Director of the Forest Economics and Policy Analysis Research Unit at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Nelson holds a PhD in forest economics from the University of British Columbia and a master’s in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Dr. Nelson’s long-term research interest is in analyzing natural and environmental resource policy, with an emphasis on forestry, and in developing new policy options that can help enhance the long-term sustainability of Canadian forests and the communities and businesses that rely upon them.

Dr. Nelson currently serves as member on the BC Forest Professional’s Association Task Force on Climate Change and as a co-leader of the working party on Forest Management for Adaptation to Climate Change under the International Union of Forest Research Organizations. He has consulted extensively with the federal government and provincial governments over trade and forest policy issues. Dr. Nelson was recently awarded an Erskine Fellowship at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.
