Angela Power

Angela Power is an ethicist and lecturer in Health Ethics, Law in Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She has completed a Master’s of Health Ethics from the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University. She specializes in ethics, privacy, and data governance. Ms. Power is a PhD candidate and is exploring privacy, ethical and social issues that stem from new health technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and digital health.

Her contribution to inspire new thinking and publications in the data ethics and privacy sphere includes a design fam on modernized consent model to unlock health innovation funded by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (2020), town halls and overall engagement on genomic medicine (2021), and various articles relating to ethics and privacy matters. In her consulting work she has developed a privacy program for small and medium-sized businesses for the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, Government of Canada, led a provincial data governance framework for Newfoundland and Labrador, and executed a world-class compliance program for the e-Genomics program, which aimed to integrate genetic data into the electronic health record and implement precision medicine into the healthcare system.

Ms. Power has been a member of various expert committees and boards and is currently an Executive Board Member of the Policy Modernization Group. Her research strives to uncover where the greatest opportunities exist to build (data) ethics, privacy, and engagement solutions to unlock health innovation. The Interdisciplinary PhD allows her to bridge her studies across the Faculties of Medicine, Engineering, and Business. This unique combination of disciplines allows her to explore challenges and opportunities that relate to build, design, and delivery of healthcare, and tensions that may exist in the development and execution of emerging health technologies.
