Burhan Ahmed Hussein

Dr. Burhan Hussein, MRSC, is an award-winning research chemist at Concordia University. He is working on developing porous materials that capture and recycle carbon from the atmosphere and oceans, as part of his groundbreaking postdoctoral research.

With a background in sustainable technologies, Dr. Hussein’s previous work at Toronto Metropolitan University focused on improving next-generation photovoltaics. His research also looked at incorporating molecular devices to improve plant resilience and yields, addressing sustainability challenges in agriculture, and designing metal-organic frameworks to convert CO2 into value-added materials.

He collaborates with academics and industry, actively promotes Canadian-led science-based research, and engages in impactful science outreach programs that primarily assist Black youth in STEM. Dr. Hussein’s dedication to diversity in science research is strengthened by his role as program lead at the Canadian Black research Network (CBSN), where he helps to elevate the Black Canadian voice in STEM.

Dr. Hussein received his doctorate in soft matter and functional interfaces from Durham University (UK) and his master’s degree in molecular science from Toronto Metropolitan University. Aside from his scholarly pursuits, Burhan’s hobbies include travelling and street dancing.
