Chaviva Hošek is President Emeritus of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), where she served as President and CEO for more than 10 years. She is also Professor in the School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Toronto.
Before she came to CIFAR, from 1993 to 2000, Dr. Hošek was Director of Policy and Research for Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. She also served a term as Minister of Housing for the Province of Ontario and was a Professor of English Literature at the University of Toronto for 13 years.
Dr. Hošek has served as President and Executive Member of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women and has held senior governance positions at the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. She serves on the Boards of the Central European University, the Leading Edge Endowment Fund of British Columbia, Maple Leaf Foods Inc., Great-West Lifeco, and the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.
Dr. Hošek obtained her PhD from Harvard University in 1973. She has received three honourary degrees, and was given the Public Policy Forum Outstanding Performance Award in 2003 as well as the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. She is an Officer of the Order of Canada and is the Lawson Foundation Fellow of CIFAR.
