Daniele Fanelli

Dr. Daniele Fanelli trained as a behavioural ecologist at the University of Florence, in Italy, and the University of Copenhagen, in Denmark. After completing a PhD on the behaviour and genetics of Malaysian and Panamanian tropical wasps, he obtained a Master of Scientific Communication at the University of Milan. While writing for prominent magazines including New Scientist, L’espresso and Le Scienze, he developed a profound interest in the philosophical and sociological aspects of science. In 2008 he was awarded a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship to work at ISSTI on a personal project, aimed at quantifying the objectivity in the natural and social sciences.

Daniele’s research focuses on bias and misconduct in science and in scientific communication. How common are these misbehaviours? What are their main causes? Are all disciplines, fields and research themes equally objective (or non-objective)? Can we tell in advance which research findings are more or less likely to be true? How do the media report on different sciences, and on cases of scientific misconduct? Daniele attempts to answer these questions using advanced statistical methods, combined with qualitative analyses.
