Kue Young, C.M., FCAHS

Kue Young is Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta. Previously, Dr. Young had been Professor and TransCanada Chair in Aboriginal Health at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto and Head of the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba. A graduate of McGill University in biological sciences and in medicine, he also has an MSc in community health from the University of Toronto, and the Doctor of Philosophy in biological anthropology from Oxford. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and certified specialist in Community Medicine.

Dr. Young devoted much of his professional career to improving the health of Aboriginal and northern communities, serving as primary care physician, public health administrator, and academic researcher. He was a Medical Research Council [later CIHR] Senior Investigator from 1998-2008. For his scientific contributions he was inducted a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2009 and Member of the Order of Canada in 2010.

While at the University of Manitoba he founded the Northern Health Research Unit. At the University of Toronto, he established the Collaborative Program in Aboriginal Health. He has been much involved in international activities, having served as a CUSO volunteer in Tanzania in the 1980s, WHO Travelling Fellow, health care consultant to various international organizations over the years. He was President of the International Union for Circumpolar Health from 1993-96, and in 2004 he founded the International Network for Circumpolar Health Research.

In addition to over 130 scientific publications, Dr. Young has published 6 books on Aboriginal and circumpolar health: Health Care and Cultural Change (1988); The Health of Native Americans (1994); Aboriginal Health in Canada (with J.B.Waldram and D.A.Herring, 1994, 2006); The Circumpolar Inuit (with P. Bjerregaard, 1998); Health Transition in Arctic Populations (with P. Bjerregaard, 2008); and Circumpolar Health Atlas (2012). He has also published the textbook Population Health: Concepts and Methods by Oxford University Press, 1998; 2nd ed 2005.
