Margot Hurlbert

Margot Hurlbert holds a B.Admin. (Great Distinction) from the University of Regina (1985), an LLB (Osgoode) (1987), LLM (Osgoode) (2005) in Constitutional Law, with a focus on Aboriginal, natural resource, energy and environmental issues. She has a PhD (2016) in Environment and Development in the Global South, Governance and Inclusive Development, Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research, from the University of Amsterdam. Dr. Hurlbert has led research projects, authored numerous journal articles, book chapters and scholarly papers on a broad range of justice and policy topics including Aboriginal justice, earth systems, water, energy, and food governance, adaptive governance, and climate change adaptation. Prior to embarking on a full-time academic career in 2005, Dr. Hurlbert practiced law in private practice in Regina for 12 years and in corporate practice as the Assistant General Counsel for SaskPower for 7 years.

Dr. Hurlbert has worked on many research projects in relation to building community energy futures, and citizen engaged water and climate governance, including a SSHRC grant Water Governance and Climate Change: the engagement of civil society, and SSHRC Insight Grants, Facilitating Knowledge Mobilization at the Science/Policy Interface, and Implementing Community Citizen Engaged Best Management Practices through Adaptive Management.
