Matthew Carlson

Matt Carlson is an ecologist interested in applying a systems dynamics approach to develop pragmatic solutions to natural resource management challenges. He is a founding partner at the ALCES Group, a leader in the application of scenario analysis to assess the cumulative effects of land use. His integrative research explores the consequences of various natural resources development (forestry, energy, mining, agricultural, and urban development) on environmental and socioeconomic indicators. As a consultant for governments, First Nations, and conservation organizations, Mr. Carlson’s work has informed planning initiatives across Canada, from the municipal to provincial scale. Recent projects have assessed the cumulative effects of natural resource development in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and the Northwest Territories; evaluated urban development strategies in the Calgary and Edmonton regions; and developed decision support tools for watershed-based planning. His background also includes conservation planning and he was previously an ecologist at the Canadian Boreal Initiative. Matt’s research has appeared in numerous technical reports, journal papers, conferences, and book chapters. Matt received a Master’s of Science in Conservation Biology from the University of Alberta.
