Susan Ziegler

Susan Ziegler is a Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Boreal Biogeochemistry in the Earth Sciences Department at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She holds a B.Sc. in Environmental Science and PhD in Marine Science from the University of Massachusetts and University of Texas, respectively. Her PhD research focused on seagrass carbon and nutrient biogeochemistry. Dr. Ziegler held a Carnegie Institute of Science Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Geophysical Laboratory in Washington, DC before taking her first faculty position in the Biological Sciences Department at the University of Arkansas where she co-directed the UA Stable Isotope Laboratory. In these positions, she focused on wetland and stream organic matter cycling applying a combined biomarker and stable isotope approach.

She was the Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Environmental Science at Memorial University from 2006 to 2016, during which time she spearheaded the Newfoundland and Labrador Boreal Ecosystem Latitudinal Transect, a research platform supporting studies of the impact of climate change on boreal forest landscapes in the Atlantic Region of Canada. Her research group investigates climate change impacts on organic matter stores, transformation, and fate across boreal forest soils, streams, and coastal ecosystems in this region with an emphasis on integrative understanding at the watershed scale. The group is particularly interested in understanding the hydrologic and biogeochemical controls on soil carbon and nutrient stores, lateral transport of organic matter and its impact on marine biogeochemistry; with all efforts aimed at informing carbon-climate feedbacks.
