Wändi Bruine de Bruin

Professor Wändi Bruine de Bruin is Professor of Behavioural Decision Making, with the special distinction of Leadership Chair. She also holds positions as Collaborating Professor in Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Engineering and Public Policy, and as Adjunct Senior Researcher at the RAND Corporation, a non-profit policy research organization. She is a member of the Scientific & Technical Committee of the International Risk Governance Council (IRGC), which provides evidence-based advice to international policy makers. She is a Visiting Professor at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where she is involved in the design and implementation of consumer surveys on inflation expectations.

Professor Bruine de Bruin has previously been a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Social and Decision Sciences (2002-2012), a visiting research scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (2007-2009) and at the Dutch Central Bank (2009), and a post-doctoral researcher at Eindhoven University’s Department of Human-Technology Interaction (2000-2002). Her research aims to study how people make decisions affecting their environmental, health, and financial outcomes, and, if needed, how to design communications to improve those decisions. Her work has been published in internationally known journals targeting multiple disciplines, including psychology, engineering, environmental science, public health, and economics. She has served as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, and Psychology & Aging. In 2012, she also served as the co-editor of a 2012 special issue of the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making on decision-making competence. She has contributed her expertise to workshops and expert panels set up by various organizations, including the National Academy of Sciences (US), the International Risk Governance Council (Switzerland), the Federal Reserve, the Centers of Disease Control (US), the Environmental Protection Agency (US), and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (France).

Professor Bruine de Bruin received a Bachelor and Master of Science in Psychology at the Free University of Amsterdam, and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Behavioural Decision Making Theory at Carnegie Mellon University.
