William Cunningham

Bill Cunningham is the Assistant Chief of the Office of Ground Water in the U.S. Geological Survey’s Water Resources Discipline.

Mr. Cunningham began his USGS career in 1988 as a groundwater hydrologist in Ohio, where his focus was on groundwater modeling and groundwater quality investigations. In 1994, he accepted a position in North Carolina as the office Ground-Water Specialist where he was responsible for contaminant hydrogeology investigations at Department of Defense sites in North Carolina, and the technical quality of groundwater studies throughout the state. In 2000, he accepted a position as Assistant Chief in the Office of Ground Water at USGS Headquarters in Reston, Virgina.

The USGS Office of Ground Water is responsible for technical support of groundwater programs in 48 USGS Water Science Centers, policies and procedures for USGS groundwater investigations and data collection, coordination of MODFLOW development, and Federal Programs for Ground Water Resources and Water Use. Mr. Cunningham provides oversight for the development of USGS groundwater database software, the U.S. Geological Survey Ground-Water Climate Response Water-Level Network, and serves as Co-Chair of the U.S. Federal Advisory Committee on Water Information, Subcommittee on Ground Water.

Mr. Cunningham is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Geological Society of America and the National Ground Water Association. His current research interests focus on groundwater flow modeling and water-level network design, regional groundwater investigations and U.S. groundwater depletion.

Mr. Cunningham holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geology and a Master of Science in Hydrogeology, from Ohio State University.
