Matthew Ivanowich, PhD

Research Associate

Matthew Ivanowich is a Research Associate at the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA). He joined the CCA in January 2017 through the internship program. In his role, Matthew is responsible for assisting the Research Associates with research, writing, and project management support.

Prior to joining the CCA, Matthew worked as an instructor at Western University, teaching a variety of undergraduate philosophy courses. He also worked as a lab associate in Western’s Brain and Mind Institute, where he collaborated with cognitive scientists on research involving human echolocation and perceptual size constancy. Previously, he worked as a research assistant at York University on projects involving animal cognition. Matthew has also worked for Elections Canada and Statistics Canada, and his interests include philosophy, science, politics, and policy.

Matthew holds a PhD in Philosophy from Western University, as well as a MA in Philosophy and a BA in English and Philosophy from York University. His doctoral research focused on interdisciplinary issues related to perception and consciousness, examining the intersection between philosophy, neuroscience, and psychology. He has published articles on these topics in academic journals and edited books. He enjoys performing research that crosses disciplinary boundaries, and applying philosophical analysis to assessments of scientific and policy-related issues.

In his time at the CCA, Matthew has worked on assessments including Competing in a Global

Economy: The Current State of R&D in Canada, and Medical Assistance in Dying.
