Tijs Creutzberg is the President and CEO of the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA), appointed in July 2024. He brings over 25 years of experience working at the intersection of policy, science, technology, and innovation.
Tijs has been part of the CCA for over a decade, leading expert panel assessments and shaping the evolution of the CCA’s processes. As President and CEO, he is focused on expanding the CCA’s impact and reach by broadening the scope and accessibility of its assessments, deepening partnerships across sectors, and ensuring that rigorous, independent evidence, continues to inform the decisions that shape Canada’s future.
Prior to joining the CCA, Tijs was a partner at Hickling Arthurs Low Corporation, where he specialized in public policy, public administration, and strategic analysis in the areas of science and technology, innovation, and economic development. His career has spanned health, environment and energy, security and science and technology policy across industry, academia and the non-profit sectors, informing his vision for the CCA as a trusted and essential partner in decision making.
Tijs began his career as an engineer in the automotive and ICT sectors before moving into innovation and research policy. He has published on innovation governance and economic development, taught political economy, and served on numerous grant adjudication and award selection committees.
He holds a BA.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, an M.Sc. in Technical Change and Industrial Strategy from the University of Manchester, and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto. He has held research fellowships at the Mowat Centre for Innovation in Policy, the Program on Globalization and Regional Innovation Systems, and the Innovation Policy Lab at the University of Toronto.
