Tom Bursey is the Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer at the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA).
Tom provides leadership expertise in a wide array of interdependent corporate functions, including accounting, finance, contract/proposal administration, information technology, operations, human resources, and corporate governance.
Before joining the CCA, Tom was a private sector executive leader with over 20 years of experience in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Defence & Aerospace, and Utilities. He was also an Ottawa Business Journal Top Forty Under 40 Recipient. He has been recognized for his many accomplishments through numerous honours and awards.
Tom Bursey is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (FCPA). A Fellow (FCPA) formally recognizes Chartered Professional Accountants (CPAs) who have rendered exceptional service to the profession and their communities. Becoming an FCPA is the highest honour a CPA can receive. He is also an Honorary Life Member of the Human Resources Professional Association (HRPA). This prestigious award is given to HRPA members for their outstanding contributions to the human resources profession.
Tom Bursey is a certified member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and a holder of the ICD.D designation. Tom also received the designation of Chartered Director (C. Dir.) from the Directors College at McMaster University and two specialized governance certifications: Audit Committee Certified (ACC) and Human Resources and Compensation Committee Certified (HRCCC).
Tom Bursey was appointed in 2018 by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development to the Board of the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), where he serves as the Audit Committee Chair. Tom also serves on several other Boards, including the Canadian Dermatology Association; CANVET Publications (a private company), where he serves as the Audit Committee Chair; and CENGN (Canada’s Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks), where he serves as Governance and Nominations Committee Chair.
Tom also served on various other Boards, including as Board Chair of the Public Services Health and Safety Association (PSHSA) and Board Chair of CODE Inc. (a private company). As a Corporate Director of C-CORE (a world leader in remote sensing, ice engineering, and geotechnical engineering), he served as the Human Resources and Compensation Committee Chair. He was recruited to C-CORE as an expert Human Resources and Compensation advisor. He also served as a Corporate Director Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information (a Provincial Crown Corporation), where he served as the Audit Committee Chair at a time of significant transition.
Mr. Bursey earned his Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) and Master of Business Administration degrees from Memorial University, which presented him with the J.D. Eaton Alumni Award in recognition of his Outstanding Contribution to Memorial University. He also earned advanced executive certificates from Western University’s Ivey Business School and the Queen’s Smith School of Business.
