Cassie Doyle to Serve as Chair for Expert Panel on Integrated Natural Resource Management

The Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) is pleased to announce Cassie Doyle, CEO of the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute (CIRDI), as Chair of the newly appointed Expert Panel on Integrated Natural Resource Management.

“Ms. Doyle has a distinguished public service career, including an extensive background in environmental and natural resource management,” said Eric M. Meslin, PhD, FCAHS, President and CEO of the CCA. “We are pleased she has accepted the role of Chair for this project and look forward to commencing the expert panel process.”

As Chair, Ms. Doyle will work with the multidisciplinary, multi-sectoral Expert Panel to address the following assessment question, referred to the CCA by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan): What is the state of knowledge and practice of integrated approaches to natural resource management in Canada?

Ms. Doyle will lead the CCA Expert Panel to assess the available evidence and deliver its final report by mid-to-late 2018. Members of the panel include experts from different fields of natural resources development, traditional knowledge, public administration, geography, ecology and economics. Panel members were identified with guidance from the CCA’s Scientific Advisory Committee and input from its Member Academies — the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. The depth of the Panel’s experience and expertise, paired with the CCA’s rigorous assessment methodology, will ensure the most authoritative, credible, and independent response to the question.

“I’m very pleased to accept the position of Chair for this assessment and I’m eager to work with such a fantastic group of experts on this important question,” said Ms. Doyle. “I look forward to shedding new light on how the evidence can be best applied to enhance the management of natural resources in Canada.”

Ms. Doyle represented Canada as Consul General in San Francisco from 2011 to 2015, and served as Deputy Minister of Natural Resources Canada from 2006 to 2010 and Associate Deputy Minister of Environment Canada from 2003 to 2006. She previously held several leadership positions within the Government of British Columbia, including CEO of the BC Assets and Land Corporation; Deputy Minister of Environment, Lands and Parks; and Deputy Minister of Small Business, Tourism and Culture. She currently serves on the board of the Alberta Energy Regulator, chairs the Affordable Housing Agency for the City of Vancouver, and is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society.
