The Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) is pleased to announce the appointments of Brian Fleck, Catherine Middleton, Hasna Rouighi, and Christine Thomas to its Board of Directors.
Brian Fleck is a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Department, at the University of Alberta. Brian has served as the Department Chair in Mechanical Engineering, Faculty Director of the Association of Academic Staff of the University of Alberta, and Board Director of the Alberta Energy Regulator, among other positions. He actively works as an engineering consultant, designer, and entrepreneur, having served as founder, advisor, mentor and inventor with several small companies. His research focuses on fluid dynamics.
Catherine Middleton is a Professor at the Ted Rogers School of Information Technology Management at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her research focusses on the development and use of new communication technologies. She held a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Communications Technologies in the Information Society, was named to the inaugural cohort of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists in 2014, and is currently a Fellow at the Rogers Cybersecurity Catalyst examining how older adults navigate the cybersecurity landscape.
Hasna Rouighi is Director at the Office of Innovation, Ministry of Health and Social Services in the Government of Quebec, where she is responsible for structuring and deploying health innovation governance in Quebec. She joined the Office of Innovation in 2020 as a team leader before becoming director. She has worked in economic development and science and innovation for more than a decade, including in the design of policies and programs and in the creation of partnerships at both the national and international level.
Christine Thomas is Vice-President, Governance and Legal Counsel at the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). She has an extensive background in legal services, corporate governance, risk management, and compliance. In her current role, she is responsible for providing governance and risk leadership to the CMA and its subsidiaries, as well as the CMA Foundation, the charitable arm of the CMA. Building on her deep expertise, Christine has served in various capacities on several boards and committees in both her personal and professional communities.

The CCA’s Board of Directors is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organization, ensuring fulfillment of the CCA’s mandate and oversight of the CCA’s operations.
