CCA Welcomes Two New Members to its Board of Governors

The Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members of its Board of Governors:

Pierre Lortie, C.M., FCAE, is a Senior Business Advisor at Dentons LLP and Past President of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

Tom Brzustowski, O.C., FRSC, FCAE, is a member of the Board of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo and of the Waterloo Global Science Initiative.

“We would like to extend a warm welcome to our two new board members, Pierre Lortie and Tom Brzustowski,” said Margaret Bloodworth, C.M., Chair of the Board. “We look forward to drawing on their significant knowledge and wisdom during their terms. On behalf of the CCA and the Board, I would also like to thank the departing members, whose contributions and commitment were greatly appreciated.”

Departing from the CCA Board are: Henry Friesen, C.C., FRSC, FCAHS, Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Senior Fellow, Centre for the Advancement of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba; Claude Jean, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Teledyne DALSA, Foundry Operation, Semiconductor; Peter Mackinnon, O.C., Former President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Saskatchewan; and Ted Morton, Executive Fellow at the School of Public Policy, Professor of Political Science, University of Calgary.

The CCA’s Board of Governors has a unique structure. Each of its three member academies – the RSC, CAHS, CAE — nominates two governors. These six governors then nominate two additional governors from the general public. The remaining four governors are proposed by the federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED), but are formally appointed by the Board. The Board is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the CCA, including fulfillment of its mandate and oversight of its operations.
